ORBi - Adaptation to the Open Access Decree Requirements (FWB)

June 5, 2025

Open Access

Since the introduction of its self-archiving mandate and the launch of ORBi in 2008, the University of Liège has consistently upheld a strong commitment to Open Access.

In line with this commitment, the University has decided  to align ORBi with the requirements of the Open Access Decree of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, both in terms of the article deposit process and the evaluation of its researchers, in the same spirit as ULB and UCLouvain.

What will change for you?

  • Only Open Access deposits will be allowed in ORBi for scientific articles published after 2018 (the year the FWB Decree came into force):
    • An embargo may be applied, not exceeding 6 months for science, technology, and (human or veterinary) medicine, and 12 months for humanities and social sciences;
    • If the publisher does not allow the deposit  of the final published version, the “author version” (final accepted manuscript without publisher formatting) must be deposited instead.
  • Templates for publication lists including only articles compliant with the Decree will be created and will be the sole ones accepted for internal evaluation purposes.

These measures will be gradually implemented starting in the 2025–2026 academic year.

To assist you, the ORBi team is offering a range of tools, including a link to automatically identify non-compliant articles among your publications.
